The Whitman Mission, founded in 1836 by Methodist missionaries Marcus & Narcissa Whitman offered religious instruction and medical services to the local Cayuse Indians. They also gave care and supplies to wagon parties travelling along the Oregon Trail.  In 1847 the mission was burned down by Cayuse Indians who believed the white settlers were responsible for a measles outbreak that took the lives of many Indians.

As usual the children were quizzed about the importance of this stop on the Oregon Trail.IMG_9192
